Svostrup Inn was founded when the Gudenå waterway was still an important traffic artery. A living throng of bargees and traders sailed up and down Gudenå and used the inn as a place to eat and rest.
Svostrup Inn, with its Royal Charter, can be dated with certainty back to 1834, but even then there had been innkeeping activities on the site for years. The grocery counter in one taproom bears witness to the time when the Inn´s grocery shop had its heyday in the building. In one of the taprooms the ceiling still has the decoration that one of the customers of those days executed as payment for board and lodging.
